What we believe ...

Printer-friendly version

St. Paul's - Lockport, is a confessional and theologically conservative congregation. We are called "confessional" in that our beliefs are clearly written out and, we pray, lived out in our daily life under the cross of Jesus Christ. It would be our privilege to share our beliefs with you as well as the peace and joy that is ours in the Savior of the world.

A good starting point in explaining WHAT it is that we believe and WHO we believe in would be to direct you to the Three Creeds of the Christian Church. Please read through these as well as the six chief parts of our faith presented in The Small Catechism written by Martin Luther. We have provided links to these materials as well as to a wonderful series entitled "What About?" which touches upon questions people frequently ask about the Christian Church and the Lutheran faith.

We mentioned that St. Paul's is also a "theologically conservative" congregation. What this means is that all of our teaching, preaching and worship is firmly rooted in the Word of God - the Holy Scriptures - which we hold to be without error and the ultimate authority in our lives. In Psalm 119 we read, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105)

At the center of our faith is, in fact, the one who is the Light of the world, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Indeed, he is at the center of our whole life - our worship life, congregational life, home life, etc. Why? Because there is no life apart from Him - apart from Jesus! Our Lord himself has told us, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6)

You will see this "Christ-centeredness" in all aspects of our church and especially so in the historic liturgy which we joyfully employ in our divine worship services that are filled with beauty and reverence where we join with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven in praising our Lord and King!
